North Carolina wine. There was a time when this idea evoked doubts and even jokes. But today, tenacious wine makers have found that the soil and climate of the North Carolina foothills are just fine for making good wines and wineries are springing up just about everywhere.

The term winery is used loosely in the region, from very small operations that process purchased juice from grapes throughout the country to some bravely trying to make wine from locally-sourced fruit.

Raffaldini Winery Groce NC Raffaldini Winery is on a big scale for this wine making region. The Raffaldini family can trace its origins back to the 14th century in the north part of present day Italy. According to their website (see link below):

"The Raffaldini family made a decision to share our centuries-old wine experience with the New World. After a long and exhaustive search for land that would reflect this experience, Raffaldini Vineyards was established in the Swan Creek area of the Yadkin Valley. From this vineyard, we handcraft our Italian wines; wines that express not only their “sense of place”, but also utilize winemaking skills that have been refined throughout the ages."

They considered over 60 properties and selected their Yadkin-Valley location for its soil quality and climate.

They planted more than thirty different grape varieties and have learned what works for them, replacing vines which did not meet their expectations. They prune their vines for a relatively low fruit-per-acre output which they believe gives a more "fruitful" wine. Their grapes include sangiovese, vermintino, montepulciano, malbec and pinot grigio.

The Raffaldini Winery is also a destination for tastings, picnics, weddings and special events. After a tasting, you can choose wine by the bottle or glass and purchase some of their cheeses and snacks or bring your own picnic. There is plenty of outdoor seating. While enjoying your wine and food you can gaze at the view of our mountains back home.
