Even new developments such as "The Woods at Horsefeathers Mountains" try to blend in with the beautiful rural setting. At the entrance to their development are flower-filled wagons, a barn with a brightly-painted mural and carved bears.

Old farmhouses dot the landscape of Rush Branch road. At right is a restored 1895 farm house with a carriage house and barn surrounded by large, old trees.

Small stores and businesses in the area are convenient for local residents and reduce the need for the drive into nearby Sugar Grove and Boone for shopping.

The Bethel Elementary School is in a convenient location for residents. The Watauga County School system is one of the best in the state of North Carolina.
