Horn In the West Outdoor Drama and the Powderhorn TheaterOctober, 2007According to the Horn in the West website: "Loved by young and old, the Horn in the West drama is located in the heart of Boone, North Carolina in one of the most beautiful outdoor theatres in the country. This adventure, from our nation's heritage, has offered thrilling outdoor entertainment to generations of Americans since it premiered in 1952." |
The Horn in the West outdoor drama is billed as the" nation's oldest Revolutionary War drama". It is the story of Daniel Boone, Nancy Ward, Dr. Geoffrey Stuart and his family. In 1771 a group of colonists called the "Regulators" take up arms against the British, are defeated at the Battle of Alamance and taken prisoner. Dr. Stuart must rescue his son from the British despite his loyalties to the British. With the help of Daniel Boone, Nancy Ward and others Dr. Stuart ultimately chooses to fight for freedom and makes the march with the Overmountain Men to King's Mountain South Carolina where they defeat the British commander Ferguson in just over and hour and turn the tide of the Revolutionary War. |
Many think mostly of New England when they think of the Revolutionary War but by 1780 the British, assuming that there were many British loyalists in the South, took Charleston and threatened the people of the Carolina mountains with death by "fire and sword" if they did not join with the British cause. Instead, men from the Carolinas and Virginia "mustered" at Sycamore Shoals in present-day Tennessee and marched on the offensive after the British forces under Major Ferguson and found them at Kings Mountain. |
Also on the Horn in the West grounds is the Powderhorn Theater. The theater has seating for 75 guests. The performers in the Horn in the West group "stretch" their skills in a variety of performances throughout the season. The theater gives performers with varying degrees of experience and a variety of skills the chance to learn from each other and produce innovative performances.
