Visitors fall in love with Valle Crucis. Their first visit to the Mast Store, the feeling of stepping back in time, the checkerboards, candy, old-time games and food all serve to create an other-world feeling, a true break from real life.

But much of the remote mountain valley feel has been lost as some of these visitors return as second-home residents and even primary home residents hovering in and around the valley. The upshot is that local residents are transforming this from an historic area to a community, providing meeting places and events for local residents but also welcoming visitors.

The Watauga River is not always accessible on its journey through Watauga County to the Tennessee border. But the highlight of the Valle Crucis Community Park is the river which borders the edge of the park, easily accessible for fishing, splashing and picnicking. On a hot summer day this cool water offers instant refreshment in the shade of its bordering trees.

According to their website:

"To say that Valle Crucis Community Park is nice little park in Valle Crucis, is akin to saying that Valle Crucis is a nice little place in the western North Carolina Mountains; It’s quite the understatement.

Valle Crucis is world-class unique, and the park is the heart of Valle Crucis; A cathedral designed by nature, "getting by with a little help from its friends". The land on which the park is situated had been put on for sale for development, and was destined to become a mobile home community.

We cannot imagine the fate of our entire community had it not been purchased and set aside by a small group of dedicated community visionaries, who purchased the land, then donated it, built the park, and turned it into a vibrant non-profit conservancy".
