On February 9, 2013 the hallways were filled with fiddlers, mandolin players, bands, dancers and their supporters and fans plus crafts and food. The 5th annual ASU Old-Time Fiddlers' Convention filled Plemmons Hall with music and conversation and the nervousness surrounding any competition.

The convention is sponsored by ASU's Appalachian Heritage Council. According to their Facebook page:

The goal of the Appalachian Heritage Council is to provide entertainment that is traditional to the Appalachian Region. Some past events include Contra Dances, Square Dances, live bands, and Appalachian story tellers. Preservation of the traditions of the Appalachian Region is the focus of this council.

The Council also sponsors the Appalachian Heritage Week and events such as Contra Dances, Square Dances, live bands, and Appalachian story tellers.

This year's convention ended with a concert by Dirk Powell. Powell learned to play banjo and fiddle from his Kentucky grandfather, threw in a little Louisiana Cajun and has worked with Joan Baez, Loretta Lynn and many other folk music greats.

Dirk Powell and Sam Bush:

This year's contest winners are listed below. But the real winners were the visitors and musicians strolling the halls, listening to the warmups and practices. Plemmons Hall was filled with amazing music that weekend and some amazing people.
