Rick Ward made his first banjo when he was 12 years old. From the community of Beech Mountain, he grew surrounded by the old music of the area. Both his grandfather and father made instruments and his mother sang many of the old songs. His grandfather performed regionally and was also a storyteller. Rick sings and plays banjo and tells family stories. His humor and unique playing style make his performances hits with local crowds. |
The Dashboard Hula Boys, a Boone trio, are Ed Midgett (guitar), Nick Hurst (bass), and Tom Whyte (harmonica, uke, tenor banjo). According to their website (see link below): "They play favorites from old-time blues to classic rock along with a few originals. To describe them as eclectic or eccentric would be limiting. They perform fully clothed at venues such as festivals, clubs, wrestling matches, celebrations, and secret society initiations, to name a few." |
They are not only good musicians but also great entertainers. All teach or work at Appalachian State. They perform classics of all types of music and some of their own songs. Their new CD, "Honolulu Moon" includes 2 songs written by Tom Whyte including the title tune. |
